Don’t risk your Auckland Airport chauffeur ride to shady operators.

Transport for London’s decision to strip Uber of its licence to operate in the city casts a fresh light on the risks of using low grade operators.

Uber is facing a class-action lawsuit over sexual assaults by drivers.

The suit claims that Uber has created a system that allows for “bad actors to gain access to vulnerable victims.”

“Uber should have made drastic changes to the way that it screens and monitors drivers. As well, it should have advanced safety measures on its app and in vehicles. It should have disclosed the truth to consumers about its insurance coverage during rides,” the lawsuit says.

“Instead, over the last seven years, Uber has done everything possible to continue using low-cost, woefully inadequate background checks on drivers. It has also failed to monitor drivers for any violent or inappropriate conduct after they are hired.

Nothing meaningful has been done to make rides safer for passengers—especially women.

The lawsuit describes all the access Uber provides for drivers to commit sexual assault.

Drivers are able to veer off-route, park in remote places, block car doors, and follow passengers into their homes.

The complaint describes several actions Uber could have taken to prevent assault, including barring registered sex offenders from driving on Uber permanently.

It could require in-person screenings for drivers.

Additionally, it should have, and could have, installed video surveillance in Ubers.

It should perform criminal background checks every six months.

And it should require drivers to tell Uber within 24 hours if they are indicted, or charged with any felony involving violence, or issued a restraining order related to domestic violence.

The lawsuit also gets into other controversies facing Uber.

The complaint cites accounts of assault by Uber drivers shared as part of the #MeToo movement; failures of background checks, including the registration as an Uber driver of the truck driver in the terrorist attack in New York on Oct. 31; the debate over whether Uber drivers are employees of Uber; and misleading advertising from Uber about “safe rides.”

One plaintiff was assaulted by an Uber driver in Los Angeles after she fell asleep in the backseat.

The other was raped by an Uber driver in her apartment in Miami.

He was arrested and charged with two counts of sexual battery, and Uber refunded her $9.51 for the ride.

BEWARE OF POOR AUCKLAND AIRPORT VAN & TAXI SERVICES

Unfortunately, the airport van and taxi market in Auckland is deregulated.
There are many cheap services on offer, that are notoriously unreliable.
Nothing is more upsetting than arriving at your destination, and then being let down or downright terrified, the moment you enter the airport.
It’s not just in Auckland that this happens. This kind of experience happens the world over.
There are however, a few simple things you can do which will minimize the harm.

CONSIDER A LUXURY AIRPORT VAN OR LIMO BEFORE AN AIRPORT SHUTTLE

In many cases, a private, chauffeured, executive sedan will cost you about the same as an airport shuttle bus.
Potentially, you can wait while ten or twelve people are dropped at their addresses before you are finally dropped off.
In tis scenario, an airport shuttle can sometimes take up to an hour and a half extra, when traveling in heavy traffic.
For a few extra dollars, or even the same price in some cases, you can enjoy the luxury of your own private ride in an executive limo with a professional chauffeur.

Some Things To Consider for Your Next Shuttlebus Ride

When deciding which shuttle bus service to use, several factors should be considered. Not all shuttle bus services are the same.

Super Shuttle service is hard to beat, because they have dedicated ranks at airports, with vehicles always available around the clock. If your flight is delayed, or even canceled it doesn’t matter too much. You know that when you eventually turn up at the airport, you can just jump on the next available shuttle.

Smaller Operators do it Better

But even the smaller shuttle operators, are able to work together to make sure each others’ work is covered in emergencies. So having dedicated ranks, is not so much of an advantage.

As an Auckland taxi driver, I am often asked by visitors stopping in for a short visit, what is the best way to spend two days in Auckland.

WAIHEKE ISLAND

I always start by recommending Waiheke island. Just a 30-minute ferry ride from downtown Auckland, Waiheke Island is eclectic mix of cultures and business. Formerly a hippie enclave, today, it has an upmarket feel, while retaining some its hippie culture past. You could experience the wonderful food at the various wineries, while taking in the amazing views of Waitemata Harbour. Perhaps spend the afternoon taking a stroll, or a swim on the beautiful beaches.

WYNARD QUARTER

Returning to Auckland in the afternoon or evening, you could spend an evening sampling the various coffee shops and restaurants of the Wynard Quarter. Checkout the Viaduct Basin, overlooking the marina, with a rich and famous feel.

BRITOMART

For nightlife, the Britomart area is the place to be, especially if the All Blacks are playing.

PONSONBY AND PARNELL

New Zealand is known for its premium dairy produce. The restaurants and cafes in Ponsonby and Parnell, are great places to sample the local fare.

MISSION BAY

You can’t visit Auckland, and miss a visit to Mission Bay. A beautiful beach, park, cafes and ice cream shops, make this place a real holiday favorite.

MT EDEN

And finally, no visit to Auckland would be complete without a walk up Mt Eden, to experience this extinct volcano, with panoramic 360 degree views of the city. Finish the expedition with a coffee, or lunch at any of the numerous Mt Eden trendy cafes and restaurants. Save the Harbor Bridge and the North Shore for your next visit.

SHARED RIDES AREN’T FOR EVERYBODY

Some enjoy the different routes traveled to and from the airport. It’s a break from the ordinary. You never know quite what you are going to get, and most of the time, everybody enjoys the ride.
